Explore Magazine, Summer 2013

This year has just flown by! So many new developments, I have had zero time to update this site.

Sites like explore-mag.com, acrossandabroad.com and mediacentre.canada.travel have been getting all of my online attention lately. And it’s been a lot of attention!

So, I’m the editor of explore magazine now, which is pretty cool. The Summer 2013 issue is hitting the newsstands right now; my second issue. I’m stoked on it, but I’m still unsure of how readers will react. A lot of good feedback from the first one (Spring) but also some doozies in terms of “hate mail.” Why do I do this again?

We returned from a month in India in January. I’ve been updating Across and Abroad with India-themed posts since my return. Check them out when you get a sec.

I’ve also had a absolute ton of work with the Canadian Tourism Commission’s corporate side. Like, a TON. It’s a great contract though, no complaints here! I had a key role in the creation of content for their new website, which is AWESOME! Check it out HERE.

I was once so good at updating this blog… I would have let you know about articles in the May/June Cottage Magazine (“Avid Angler”)… and others…

Look for big updates to this site soon — total revamp after three years with the same design!

“Ice Fishing,” Nov/Dec Cottage Magazine

OK, this isn’t new — it came out in November, I’m just shamelessly behind on my updates. But nevertheless, I covered ice fishing in the Nov/Dec issue of Cottage Magazine, representing the third instalment of my series on sport fishing.

I love writing about fishing, because I love to fish. Even though ice fishing is not may favourite style, it still can be fun. Just bundle up.

I’m really behind on my updates because I’ve entered a new phase in my career — stay tuned for some exciting updates in the coming months.

"Fall Fly Fishing," Cottage Magazine, Sept/Oct 2012

It’s a poorly-kept secret that September and October presents British Columbia’s stillwater fly fishermen with some of the hottest action of the year.

And, in the second of my series of Fishing Technique columns in Cottage Magazine, I show anglers the best flies to take to the water this fall.

It’s straightforward and not-too-techy, so this article suits the part-time angler, not necessarily the entomologist. You don’t have to tie your own flies to catch fish.

"C.R. Chum", The Outdoor Edge, Sept/Oct 2012

More than 55,000 readers across Western Canada are right now enjoying one of my latest fishing articles, “C.R. Chum.”

Appearing in The Outdoor Edge magazine, this feature documents a two-day fishing trip to Campbell River, BC, where I attempt to determine whether or not the town deserves its title as “Salmon Capital of the World.”

I’ll spoil the ending — In October, it does.

The Outdoor Edge is a controlled-circ publication, distributed to members of Western Canada’s wildlife federations.

"A Boater's Guide to Wildlife Safety," Pacific Yachting, July 2012

Following some concern from his readership regarding wildlife safety in British Columbia’s parks and wild spaces, the editor of Pacific Yachting commissioned me to write a feature article on the subject.

“A Boater’s Guide to Wildlife Safety” is on stands now, in the July 2012 issue of Pacific Yachting. I actually learned quite a bit about bear safety in particular while researching this article.

Did you know that 88 per cent of black bear attacks were from male bears? Kind of debunks the whole “look out for a momma with cubs” argument… just one of many cool facts in the article.

"Lucky Lures," Cottage Magazine, July/August 2012

The July/August issue of Cottage Magazine is one anglers will enjoy — thanks to an article I wrote entitled “Lucky Lures.”

In an effort to educate cottage fishermen on the ways of the fisherman, I put together an article on how to use classic lures in new and effective ways. Trolling techniques for spoons, new uses for flies and jigs and effective spinner presentations are just some of the topics covered. If you want to catch more fish on your local lake, pick up a copy today.

It’s one of at least four technique-based fishing articles I’ll be doing for Cottage Magazine over this and next year. Keep posted!

I’m touched… for the second time in as many years, one of my blog posts has been featured on the Home Page of The Travel Blog Exchange.

For those who don’t know, TBEX, as it is known, is the premier organization for networking and promoting travel blogs and bloggers. They host annual conferences which draw thousands of visitors, and really champion the industry as a whole.

And they love me, they really love me!

Western Sportsman, May/June 2012 is out now!

With the May/June issues of Western Sportsman & The Outdoor Edge magazines out now, I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the first half of the year.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m the editor of both of these magazines. Both are incredibly popular: The Outdoor Edge is the largest-circulation outdoors magazine in Western Canada (and third-largest in Canada with 60,000 paid circ) and Western Sportsman has over 40 years of heritage and has a large and devoted readership right across the country (30,000 sold copies per issue).

So far, the year has been great. Ad sales are looking incredible and newsstand sales (for Western Sportsman, as The Outdoor Edge is controlled circ) are strong. The next three issues are historically our biggest and best-selling of the year…

So far, so good! Here’s to more success in the second half of ’12!

Pacific Yachting magazine, "Vancouver: Harbouring Something Special"

Pick up a copy of the May 2012 Pacific Yachting magazine — and you’ll find one of the largest features in the issue is by yours truly!

It’s called “Vancouver: Harbouring Something Special,” and it’s a destination/cruising guide for boaters visiting my home city of Vancouver, BC. I put a lot of local flair and information in it, so I’m sure everyone will enjoy the read.

The feature is complemented by a couple of my images too — there would have been more, but the weather was awful at the time of writing, and it’s supposed to be a summery story…

New Article in Cottage Magazine, "Cariboo Cottages," by David Webb

If you’re interested in recreational property in British Columbia — or just like reading about it — make sure to pick up the May/June issue of Cottage Magazine.

I’ve got a great new feature article in this issue, “Cariboo Cottages.” In this piece, I delve into central BC recreational real estate. How much does it cost? Where should you buy? What is it like there?
